Let's NOT Talk Turkey

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 6:20 pm

The carving. The leftovers. The endless stuffing. Actually, you love the stuffing, cranberries and turkey trimmings. However, it’s been seven years and you know your family will throw the turkey out the window if they have to eat the bird one more Christmas (and never mind the lectures about starving children in Ethiopia—or better yet, send them the turkey if you can get it through security.)

The Pilgrims and your third-grade teacher started something by preaching the turkey gospel. But if you didn’t have turkey—as your vegetarian friends remind you, it’s so much better than Big Macs— what would you serve?

Some ideas:

  • Lasagna—it’s always a crowd-pleaser.

  • Slice avocadoes and combine with sliced cucumbers, chopped green olives, diced tomatoes, and sliced onions for a winter red/green salad.

  • Serve Mexican and have a “Feliz Navidad” party.

  • Serve Holiday Noodles—Thai, lo mein, crispy, or egg noodles tossed with scallions and covered with red curry powder or red pepper.

  • Get your Omega-3 boost from salmon, made festive with salsa and guacamole toppings.

  • Make a “Christmas pizza”: green peppers, tomatoes, goat cheese, green olives…let your imagination run wild!

Of course, don’t forget the Christmas cookies!

Enjoy the turkey-free healthy and tasty holiday traditions you’ve created.

Blackhole or Fail - Which One Is Better For Your Mail Server?

Filed under: House Of Net Resources — admin @ 11:50 pm

Very often SPAMMERS take advantage of catch-all email setup on webservers. Every email no matter what the recipients email address is will be caught by the default email account. It is highly recommended not to use catch-all email accounts and to discard SPAM send to non-existing email addresses. SPAM will clog up your SMTP server and consum resources like bandwidth and disk space in mailboxes. In most mail servers and web control panels (like cPanel) the user or admin can decide what will happen to emails with no existing recipient on the server. Refuse to the let emails onto the server and to let the sender’s mail server deal with it (option: “:fail:”) or to accept these incoming messages but then to delete them right away (option: “:blackhole:”.

Our conclusion:

:fail: is the preferred option over :blackhole:.

The :blackhole: option accepts everything sent to the domain mail server and then throws away the email going to a non-existing email account. This option uses the full amount of bandwidth, and also requires that the server be reading and writing messages to disk before they are deleted… multiply this by 1,000 messages a day or so and you can imagine the impact onto your server resources. Imagine your an email address from your domain (a non-existing one) has been spoofed to send out SPAM messages that even carry a virus. Most natural many of these messages will bounce back and hit your mail server. Your web server would have to deal with thousands of attachments at a time. Performance will go down - no matter what.

:fail: stops emails send to invalid recipients from entering the mail server in the first place..Exim will reject each message during the smtp handshake conversation - therefore the actual email message will never make it to your server. It is being refected from entering your system and the sender’s email server has to deal with the stuck message. This option is also the better one for legitimate emails where the sender has actually mis-spelled the recipients email address. He would get a bounce message informing him so that the error can be corrected. Depending on your hardware - a server can handle many more :fails: than it can do :blackholes:.

Filed under: Caveat Emptor, Living With Telecommunication, Tech — admin @ 8:26 am

Pauline Trotter, Ovum analyst, commenting on Orange’s latest mobile broadband offer, told ZDNet UK that small business owners are guarded against signing up for mobile broadband due to their misgivings about the amount the service could cost them. She however expressed the hope that Orange’s scheme will encourage them to give mobile broadband a shot and at the same time motivate other service providers to come up with similar deals. In fact, many providers already are, click here for info on the best mobile broadband deals.

The Orange offer she was referring to is a time-bound deal, which makes mobile broadband on its network available to small businesses that are already its customers at a cost of £7.50 for a month. Is Your Cookware Poisoning You?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:42 am

For over 40 years scientists have known that the fumes from hot non-stick surfaces can kill birds such as canaries. So just how dangerous are they to humans?

Several studies have been conducted into health concerns surrounding Teflon, the coating invented and patented by DuPont. The results have been disturbing, if somewhat inconclusive.

While the lethal effect on birds is well documented and not in dispute, much of the other evidence tends to be anecdotal at best. And some of it is downright confusing.

For example, the chemical perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is usually cited as the villain of the piece and the root cause of the illnesses that have allegedly appeared in some users. However DuPont claims Teflon doesn’t contain this chemical, although it is used in the manufacturing process.

Whatever the truth of that may be, it’s certainly accurate to say that there have been a number of health issues emerging in the community immediately adjacent to the DuPont factory in Parkersburg, West Virginia; more about that later.

There also seems to be some disagreement among authorities as to the temperatures at which the bird-lethal fumes are given off. These are quoted as ranging from 285F to 475 and more.

Since both these figures are well within the smoke points of edible oils such as avocado and safflower, keeping your budgie in or near the kitchen is definitely not good for his health.

But what about your health?

Human victims have complained of flu-like symptoms, some leading to respiratory complications, after using non-stick cookware. Some reactions have been reported as “severe”".

At least one report suggests that the fumes may be cancer inducing after prolonged exposure, although none suggest that Teflon itself is harmful if swallowed.

If the fumes are harmful to humans, then there is much more to consider than just kitchen items. Some brands of light bulb, portable heaters and even Gore Tex clothing are all produced using PFOA, the same reactive agent used in the case of Teflon.

Not surprisingly, DuPont denies there is any problem; but this hasn’t prevented the company from paying out millions of dollars in compensation, not only to their employees but to 50,000 people living in the vicinity of the Parkersburg factory. You have to ask yourself “why?”.

Complaints have included accusations of water pollution, high infant mortality rates and a greater than normal incidence of cancer among the local population. DuPont has never admitted liability in any of these cases.

While the jury still seems to be out on the safety or otherwise of Teflon in the home, even DuPont’s own experts advise caution when using non-stick items, particularly with regard to high cooking temperatures.

And this is something you can rely on: when Teflon and similar coatings are heated to a certain point, fumes are given off. These fumes will kill pet birds that inhale them. It’s therefore reasonable to suppose that other forms of life may also be at risk.

You can get more information on the Teflon debate from this address http://www.ewg.org/reports/toxicteflon/es.php

I’m a Work at Home Mom, but I Still Use My Crock Pot

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:54 pm

Most of my friends work outside of their homes. That’s not unusual. There are a few of us, however, who have chosen to stay at home with our young children. We’re the minority, but still not unusual.

What should be considered unusual is the discovery recently uncovered among my group of busy female friends. ‘We-who-work-at-home’ utilize our crock pots approximately 75% more frequently than those who have traditional j.o.b.s.! This statistic is of course in no way official, just a quick sampling of local gals; but a shocker nonetheless. We also thought the new ‘cupcake carrier’ was awesome. Go figure.

Why then, do the ‘moms-who-work’ choose to neglect the one piece of equipment capable of solving a multitude of meal-planning/creation problems with just the flip of a button? After a brief survey, I have concluded that their error in meal prep judgment stems from merely a lack of information. Even in the twenty-first century, a large number of intelligent mothers still think that the lowly crock pot stashed away in their attics is useful only on occasions calling for ‘meatball appetizers’ or baked beans to take to ‘Aunt Shirley’s’ house on Labor Day. What? How can this be? Naturally this information gave way to many shouts of ‘oh, no’ and ‘my goodness’ from the ‘moms-who-stay-home’ but yet use their slow cookers religiously.

I too used to be one of the ‘fast cookers’ who worked away from home. During those years I probably used my crock pot two or three times a year. We also ate way more fast-food in those days than we do now. Running around like I did from job to home to kid activity, it’s a wonder we weren’t malnourished. Dominoes did a very brisk business on our street as well.

Strangely enough, many folks believe that since I’m home all day, just playing with kids and checking my email (yeah right,) meals should be a total breeze. Heck, to hear them tell it I should be preparing gourmet meals everyday with a smile on my face while sporting a pearl necklace and high heels. Again I say, ‘what?’ Hello, twenty-first century here people. If we’re working at home these days, most likely you’re finding us not only minding our young children, but simultaneously running successful home businesses. Without some effective meal planning, we’d still be keeping the pizza delivery guy running in style.

So how does the crock pot make life easier? Not rocket science folks. I don’t even spend time planning out a month’s worth of meals. As long as I have a good supply and variety of meats and other staples in my kitchen, along with some simple crock pot recipes that my family will actually eat, I’m set. Getting it all started in the morning takes anywhere from five to ten minutes. While I’m making coffee and listening to my little ones enjoy yet again another episode of ‘Dora’, I plop the ingredients into the pot, and after putting the lid on and setting the button on low, I’m done. There’s nothing more to think about, and my house smells fantastic all day long.

Get that crock pot down from the attic, dust it off, or better yet clean it first, find yourself some delicious recipes and you’ll be on your way to joining the ranks of the moms of the ‘Slow Cooking Renaissance.’ Enlighten yourselves to the benefits of crock pot cooking and watch your lives improve and your families beam with joy as they devour your results.
